These Birds Fly North – to The Hague
The installation These Birds are Flying to the North, by Belgian composer Serge Verstockt, consists of 48 caged mechanical birds that respond to every voice and express their joy by chirping cheerfully. As soon as one of the birds starts the concert, the others join in, creating a veritable cacophony of bird sounds. This beautiful installation has been touring many countries since 2013, to the great joy and enthusiasm of the audience.
Normally birds fly south because it is too cold for them here in the winter. But these birds are very special: they fly to the cold north to sing their song in the snow.
The birds started their life as an active part of Hold Your Horses, the first Grand Opéra de Trash by Verstockt and ChampdAction, which premiered in 2013. In this installation and other spin-off projects, the beautiful birds from the Far East have spread their wings themselves and you can encounter them in unusual locations.
To be visited from 13 to 31 April 2025 in the architecturally impressive Amare, the cultural heart of The Hague. An unmissable experience for lovers of contemporary art, natural phenomena and experimental sound art.
Immerse yourself in the sounds of a lively aviary! Your footsteps trigger the chirping of a bird, which triggers another bird sound each time. These unique and unusual birds have come here from faraway places to enchant you, so don’t disappoint them. Step into their world, but do it quickly, before they fly away again!
