For Trainspotters Only

On her debut album Belgian based multi-instrumentalist Ann Eysermans explores the possibilities of the train as a music instrument: a deep quest into a fascinating and mesmerizing world, which started as a five year old kid, when she climbed on board of the train helm station during a trip from Antwerp to Ostend.

For the compositions ‘Prelude and Fuga For Four Diesel Locomotives And Harp’ Eysermans had the chance to capture the sounds of diesel locomotives (HD 51, 54, 55 and 60) of the Belgian Train World Heritage collection.

Microscopic hissing vibrations of steaming engines slowly entwine and resonate with fragile harp playing, getting on track for an unconventional sonic rail journey.

A melancholic odyssey of sound in motion: Ann Eysermans let the sparkling harp notes dissolve into the tones of pulsating train wheels.

On the B-side she bends her soft singing voice around deranged horn melodies in ‘Le Départ’, connects delayed organ harmonies in ‘De Vertraging’ with the dying frequencies of a trembling and humming locomotive from the 60’s.

On the key track ‘For Trainspotters Only’ Ann Eysermans assembles a hauntingly piece of musique concrete with clanging chimes, broken music boxes, ghostly whispers and throbbing machine room sounds.

A lonely barking dog and the last train announcement on a desolate platform in ‘Chorale’ also mark the last part of this spellbinding record.

On ‘For Trainspotters Only’ Ann Eysermans takes you on an immersive and meandering ride, connecting the dots between the free spirit of Alice Coltrane, the orchestrated field recording compositions of Chris Watson, Basil Kirchin soundtrack vibes and the magic realism of Claire Rousay.

Marko Ciciliani
TRANSGRESSIONS

This release presents four performance-based audiovisual works by Marko Ciciliani, performed by Barbara Lüneburg (violins), Szilard Benes (bass-clarinet) and himself (live-electronics):

The works have resulted from Ciciliani’s long-standing preoccupation with musical composition that extends to visual media. Those works show diverse approaches in the articulation of the relationships between performance, sound and visuals. They range from tight ‘mickey mousy’-synchronizations - most prominently to be found in Via and Formula minus One, via counterpuntal settings – as in Time Machine, to very loose layerings, which characterize certain sections of STEINA

This release consists of a book with 72 pages and a USB data carrier, beautifully designed by Isabelle Vigier. The USB stick contains HD video recordings of the four audiovisual compositions. Apart from short introductions into the individual pieces, the book contains a reprint of Marko Ciciliani’s text Music in the Expanded Field which is based on a lecture he gave on August 10, 2016 at the International Summer Courses in Darmstadt. Although he does not directly address his own compositions in this text, it is a detailed description of his understanding of interdisciplinary composition, and therefore also of his own work.

Sonitum Horarium
Hans Beckers

In 2012, Sonitum Horarium was commissioned by ChampdAction for the 9th edition of their Time Canvas Festival at the M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp).
In Sonitum Horarium, the rocky instruments originate from different parts of the world. Each type of sand produces a unique noise and sound. The sound is determined by the texture, the fineness and the graininess of the sand. In Sonitum Horarium, the sounds of sand are joined by the sound produced by the installation itself.

Hans Beckers: Sonitum Horarium, Sand organ, Table noise machine (played with electric toothbrushes, a massage machine, a pedipeel machine, all kinds of transformers and chargers, sponges, an electrified wire loop machine, winchester clock elements, static electricity, bicycle lights, electric clocks and chalk grains
Bart Maris: Trumpet, Bugle and Picollo Trumpet

Cloud Chamber
Peter Jacquemyn: double bass & voice
Stefan Prins: live-electronics

Clouds are generally amorphous.
A cloud can assume virtually any shape to someone looking at the skies with a bit of fantasy.
Cloud Chamber: a little cloud of chamber music for those open to listening with a bit of fantasy.

Peter Jacquemyn - October 2016

According to particle physics, a cloud chamber is a container made of supersaturated water or alcohol. When an otherwise imperceptible charged particle passes through it, a trace is left specific to that particle's shape. If a uniform magnetic field is applied across the chamber, the differently charged particles curve in opposite directions, creating elaborate traces.
In essence, improvising is like creating a cloud chamber. Inside the container of a performance, the unheard is made audible and energy is transformed into a network of traces and trajectories. Peter's double bass and my electronics act as a constantly changing magnetic field that curves these particles into different densities, constellations and forms. They appear for a fraction of an instance and then evaporate until the next particle makes its entry.

Coalesce - Benjamin Van Esser

Coalesce is a cycle of compositions which came to existence in the light of Benjamins PhD research project ‘[IN]VISIBLE: Towards an Artistic Performance Strategy for Computer Musicians’. It investigates the role of the computer musician in live performance situations. Throughout this cycle, which is comprised of 6 electro-acoustic compositions, the computer musician slowly evolves from a disembodied, invisible entity, only manifesting itself through computer programming, to an embodied performer, playing ‘the instrument’ in an on-stage performance environment. Hereby, this cycle doesn’t only attempt to demonstrate the importance of the computer musician’s presence on stage during electro-acoustic performances, it also aims to establish a notion of artistry, originating from and presented by the computer musician, in order to optimize performer-audience communication.

miniatures - 64-Feet

Whilst observing a miniature image, a small feature of a wooden ornament,

an illustration or an ancient manuscript, one can sense a totaly different reality.

When observing more closely, one sees a world full of colours, forms, layers and materials.

The creation process becomes apparent. One gets an expression of the complexity of the image,

which lingers in the memory.

MONOLITH – Takao Hyakutome

“Perhaps our struggle to search for new music, as we do now, might seem totally nonsensical for advanced beings of higher dimensions. Idling in such thoughts, I can picture an unknown, mysterious and far more intelligent species having built a MONOLITH for their own reasons, and yet nobody knows when it was raised nor if it would ever move or vanish in the future, as in the SF novel 2001: A Space Odyssey by A.C. Clarke.”

All the compositions featured on MONOLITH showcase the extensive palette of the acoustic violin and prove its utility in the individual musical language of each of the composers. Ferneyhough’s piece displays complex rhythmical figures. Malondra explores sub-harmonics and enthusiastically uses extended techniques. These are also broadly utilized by Frenkel. Finally, Kiyama’s heavily distorted sound, as if electric devices were in use, contrasts well with the intimate and fragile tone of Baltakas. These outstanding works cohere and coalesce into something that gradually draws apart from the solid idiom of classical music.

In Reciprocity Nico Couck explores the possibilities of the back-and-forth motion. Be it in physical energy, sounding textures, or even in the performer's approach to the instrument. How can constantly interpolating gestures become relevant and substantial in musical practice?

Simon Steen-Andersen's work transforms musical information to visuals in the opposite way of Mark Applebaum's work. Johannes Kreidler creates a multi-dimensional space of sounding and 'außermusikalischer' motion - while Clemens Gadenstaetter's music balances on the verge of instrumental sonorities and spoken word. Marko Ciciliani comments and questions both the pop and contemporary music scene, using The Beatles' Yesterday as point of reference. And finally, new work by Stefan Beyer in which the semantics of sound production are compromised.

TRAILER

"Couck brings tremendous technique to Reciprocity: the album really is as much about the composer’s instructions as it is about the musician’s interpretation, and the listener gains a real sense of a dynamic relationship between the two axes. Each work, Couck writes in his excellent sleeve notes, is ‘based on materials that do not belong together’ and this is reflected in tone and structure throughout." Louise Gray (2014). DIG DEEP double bass & voice - Peter Jacquemyn

‘La ruta nos aportó otro paso natural.’ A palindrome originating from the Compostela pilgrims: the route provides us with the next natural step.
This is how my solo improvisations come about: each sound inevitably produces another in a naturally associative manner.
I don’t construct; the musical development occurs through an internal associative logic. The music steers itself. I am the incidental yet indispensable vehicle that allows its transmission, the “Darstellung”.
